As with all other health professions, health informatics is the practice of using data, information, and knowledge for clinical care, scientific inquiry, decision making, and problem solving to improve the health, safety, and effectiveness of those working and being cared for within the system of health care delivery. Management of this data includes acquisition, analysis, and protection of digital and traditional types of information. The Board is charged with developing accreditation standards, and then assessing whether the programs meet these standards. The Board is responsible for the accreditation of programs, and, in conjunction with the Accreditation Councils, the Board establishes and maintains accreditation standards, policies, and procedures for accreditation of educational programs in the health informatics and health information management professions.

Of undergraduate programs required to report, 44 were found to be fully compliant; the remaining programs require modification of their compliance report.

They work on the classification of disease and interventions to ensure their standardization for use in clinical, financial, and legal purposes.
